Highlighted Species: Not endangered in themselves, however many native/old/iconic baletes are declared as heritage trees, and ficus trees in general are an exceptional resource for wildlife, including many endangered and threatened species in tropical forests. Status: Ficus virens In their natural habitat in the Philipines, balete trees grow by sending out long hanging aerial roots. When the roots touch the ground, they grow into new trunks, resulting over time in a tangled webwork of cascading root/trunks. As the balete grows older and these grow thicker, the tree gains a mysterious character, riddled with secret inner chambers where supernatural forest being dwell. Mariit is a belief that the there are unseen creatures that live in all the parts of nature, and thus they need to be respected and cared for, because we exist within that very ancient framework of the land. Very old balete trees, hundreds of years old, or even over a thousand years old, are known to be a favored host for nature spirits, as well as providing shelter and food for the more physically real birds and animals and insects.
