It was named Te Wheke-a-Muterangi. This octopus grew great and monstrous, and Muturangi used it to terrorize the villagers who had ostracized and cast him out, and steal their fish. Eventually, the warrior Kupe came to confront the beast, and Kupe and Te Wheke engaged in a titanic battle. Great gauges were carved into the land. Te Wheke's great arms caused boulders to churn up in long lines. At last Kupe split Te Wheke in two with a mortal blow. The land has since then reflected in its geology, the great struggle that took place.
