Poised between extremes, the dancer hovers in a tranquil place of balance – temporary, perhaps, but currently at peace. Movement, for the moment, has become stillness, the fifth of Gabrielle Roth’s five rhythms that guide our lives. Harmonizing with the sublime source of the universe – the First Sound, Om – this passion is actually a LACK of passions. In place of thorny and tumultuous emotions, the dancer has attained serenity. Yet serenity is almost always fleeting in this life. The pace of movement and transition inevitably unbalances that sense of calm. Moving with perfect tranquility seems impossible in this life, and while a seeker might find Nirvana someday, that precious state is a far cry from earthly life. Besides, we are tumultuous creatures by nature, sliding from extremity to balance and then back into motion again. Even the most skillful practitioners of yoga and other disciplines have their bad days… and the ones who do not appear to do so are often putting up a front. Serenity, then, is the balance between human experiences, flowing through a sense of gracious acceptance.
